Manston Processing Centre is a short-term holding facility located on a former military base in Kent. Opened in February 2022 in response to growing numbers of migrants and asylum seekers reaching the UK by boat, the centre was the source of public and political controversy in October/November 2022 when reports emerged highlighting extreme overcrowding, the detention of individuals - including children - well beyond the centre's 24-hour detention limit, and squalid conditions. Observers reported asylum seekers having to sleep on the floor for nights on end, detainees being prevented from using toilets in private, and the spread of diseases including diphtheria and scabies.
